Toilet Venting
I was hoping you could help me with a general question about my 2nd floor toilet operation. My TOTO toilet creates a gurgling and/or choking sound when flushed. I have research this problem and found that it maybe cause by improper venting. I also conducted a 2-gallon bucket test and got the same noise. I repeated this test on my neighbors main floor TOTO toilet. The flush worked as designed without any gurgling noise or a choking sound. The water from the flush completely cleaned the bowl.
Could you please tell me what the proper code and/or requirement is for venting a toilet. I believe my venting system is tied into the sink, shower and maybe another bathroom below this one.
Thank you
Sam Brugato

Nice toilet but you need to rod your vent from the roof if you can get up there safely. Run enough rod to reach roof top to basement floor and 20' more.

Most bathroom groups are roughed in like this.
Toilet connects to sewer main or the stack vent. Lavatory connects to toilet drain and runs a vent off the top the stubout tee out the roof or revents back into a dry vent in the attic.. The toilet wet vents through the lavatory vent and the tub/shower connects to the lavatory drain and is wet vented by it. The vent off the lavatory may be run out the roof or revented back into a dry vent in the attic or if you're reventing back into a fixtures dry vent you must make your connection at least 6 inches over that fixtures flood rim. This is a normal rough in and is acceptable both by local and state codes and also The Standard Plumbing Code Book in 90 percent of the country. Check your local codes.to make sure you're not in the excluded 10 percent. Soumds like you may have a blocked vent ,(do you hear any other noises when you drain?) but first auger the toilet to be sure there's nothing down in there. Good luck, Tom.

Sorry Sam but I guess my answer was too short the first time. Tom and I both think your vent is getting stopped up and should be rodded down from on top of the roof. It doesn't mean improper like it was built incorrectly, it is just becoming blocked. The gurgle is like holding a full bottle of soda upside down and taking your thumb of the top, as it drains is gurgles because no air is getting in behind the liquid as it drains. That's what your toilet is doing.

Hello, My problem is this;
I'm installing a shower and a toilet side by side. From the main stack, the shower sits closest, then the toilet. Some time ago, a plumber friend of mine told me I could vent my toilet through my shower vent. My shower drain is to be 2" PVC, and the toilet 3" PVC. Both...

Running a 4" ABS. Upstream about 5' will be a 4X4X2 Wye for the tub with it's own vent, plus another 4X4X2 Wye for the washer with it's own vent.
The main's stack vent will be about 6' downstream. I believe that meets code since there are 2 vents upstream of the toilet, am I right? Also, is...
