    Overactive thyroid?
Hello I am a 24 yr old female. I went to be evaluated for ADHD in July of 2007. I was given a TSH test to check for possible hyperactive thyroid before a referall was given for ADHD treatment. I was told it was normal and began seeing a psychiatrist for ADHD.
During that time also I had a birth control implant (Implanon) inserted which releases a small amount of progesterone over 3 yrs.

Upon my first few visit with my psych. He questioned me and told me he believed I was depresses. I ignored him... Then around late Sept-Oct I had horrible mood swings, weight loss, (I was 123) I lost 21 pounds, dropping me to 102 for a few weeks, Irregular and heavy periods, Hairloss, all the typical hormone/thyroid symptoms. I then started on meds for depression which have helped tremendously with my anger and depression. I decided to go see my OBGyn about the hairloss and irregular periods. He put me on Premarin and it helped too. He also decided to do another TSH test which read 0.875. My previous TSH test had read 0.96. SO he had me come back 6 weeks later. That test read 0.650.

He said it was normal, but I am concered that if it has dropped from .960 - .875 - .650.
Its dropping to me. I could be wrong. Also my grandmother was Dx with a Hyperactive thyroid in Dec.

I am going in tomorrow to discuss the removal of the Birth control implant to help with some problems. But I feel that my thyroid could be hyperactive or get to be. Should I request another TSH test? How should I know if I need more screenings?

    Kellie:)

I think your implant was the real culprit here and not any thyroid problem. Get that implant out of your body and you'll be much better within a week. I am surprised that your GYN dr didn't take the thing out when you were experiencing all the hairloss, etc problems and just put you on more hormones! They call it "practice of medical/healing arts" and I;m beginning to think it's "practice of magic arts" from some of the horror stories I've read lately.
