Thinking of buying a house (single family) with no laundry hookup. There is space in the kitchen to add one, near the water pipes and such. If we do it, we will be doing it ourselves. What all do we need to do and are there any good step by step resources available?

JuliAnns - A very low cost of doing this is also easy to do . GO to a plumbing stpor or Lowe's, tell them you want parts to hook up your clothes washer to your kitchen sink I know they have them ,because when I was still working, I got them for a lot of people, If person working in plumbing area does not know what you are talking about ,GO to the appliance Dept. Years ago my wife and I used this when we rented, What you do is hook the washer right to the faucet spicket, you get the water & it also lets the wash water drain out the same part. I have installed a couple of washer and dryer systems to understand that they are fairly easy to do.
There are two or three areas that need close attention. One is the plumbing - water has to flow down and the system has to be vented. Check with local code at the city or town hall. Two, if you are using a gas dryer it is very important to test the black piping for leaks - do not use a lighter to check for leaks do not!!
If you are using an electric dryer, they are much easier to install and safer for a DIYfer. Again, check with local code for help.

I it is very convenient to have a washing and drying system in the house specially connivently located. But, make sure that it is a safe installation.
