Hello,

I'm quite new here and never had to deal with US A/C systems and thermostat.
I was wondering if my thermostat was working as it should and I was desperately looking for information on any Janitrol thermostat like mine.

Actually, what Moronix said is exactly what happens here. Like Moronix, I'd like to know if it is the expected behavior to have "cool-like air" blowing when only the upper mercury switch is on the right (on) and the lower on the left (off).:confused:

I going to look for an explanation of the so-called 2-stage heating systems.
Anyway, I feel like the air blowing is cold but not as cold as the outside 30~35F air.
Finally, I can't stand this blowing air almost continuously. :mad: I feel colder than if the system was down when the second switch goes off.:eek:

I don't have any information on the model of thermostat, just the brand.

Sorry if my post is quite confused but feel free to ask me for more detailed explanation if needed. :o

I don't know that you have a heat pump or just a blower that is running constantly. Can you put a thermometer at the register and tell us exactly what it reads. 90 degrees F. is perfectly normal operation for a heat pump, although it doesn't feel that warm from just a foot away from the supply vent.

I believe that the whole system for my apartment is composed of the thermostat (seems to be a Janitrol HPT 18-60), an electrical furnace (Texfan CVX 18-6) and an electrical unit outside, probably called the heat pump.

From my deck, I can see an helix turning when the first mercury switch is on (remember, it's when not warm air is blowing in my apt).

What is the register you are talking about? Is it this box outside?

Maybe it is the same for me. I can't expect to reach a 70F temperature as it is lower 30s outside... But inside temperature doesn't seem to drop and then only first stage is on almost 100% of the time and the second stage would never switch on. Weird...

I don't know exactly what you mean by "register". Is it the hole in the wall from which the air is coming inside my apartment?

I checked this afternoon and the brand of the unit outside is Goodman CPLE series. I don't remember well but it's something like CPLE18-1C.

If I'm right about the register, here is what I see:
When I have the first stage (upper switch?) on, temperature hardly reaches 70F at the register. the command temp is 72F and the apartment temperature will never reach that.

If I set the command to 68F, it doesn't reach this temp either. It's like the first stage is useless, and just blows air sucked in by the furnace. But since only stage 1 is on, the furnace doesn't heat the air, right?

If I set the command temp high enough, stage 2 comes on (lower mercury switch). It doesn't make more sound when it comes on but the temp at the register goes to 90F. When stage 2 goes off, stage 1 keeps on... The temp at the register drops as above and stage 1 never stops since command temp isn't met.
