Filing returns for 2005 with my spouse
I am on H1 visa since Feb 05. My wife joined me in April 05 on H4 visa.

Currently I am using TaxCut to file my return and later along with my Fedral return I will be applying for my spouse W7.

    I have the following Queries:
    1. Do you want to file a joint return with your spouse? Yes/No
How What should I answer this question.

    2. My wife does not have the ITIN number so what should I mention in the SSN# field.

    Thanks
    Rahul

    Rahul:

Yes, file jointly with your wife.

Download Form W-7 from www.irs.gov, fill it in as required by the instructions and mail the W-7, your tax return (leave your wife's SSN field blank) and any other documents required by the W-7 instructions to the IRS Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (the address is both on-line at the IRS website and in IRS Pub 519).

The IRS personnel will issue you the ITIN, put it on your tax return and process the return. They will mail you the ITIN so you can then file your state income tax return.

    Hi. Thanks and lot,
My only concern is that when I try using turbo tax and add my wife's name, it prompts me to enter the SSN#/ ITIN# and that is a mandatory field.
As she currently does not have the ITIN# so how should I proceed.

    Thanks
    Rahul

If TurboTax will not allow you to print out the return without the SSN, then you will need to download the Form 1040 from www.irs.gov.

I believe that there is a fill-in version of the form available on the IRS website, so you could compute the tax using TurboTax, then just transfer the numbers to the fill-in form.

Using the cut-and-paste function on your computer will make this process relatively easy.
