Operation for abnormal smear - Dilema to have it or not
    Hi there!

Now, byt the time you have read this post, you will no doubt think I am mad not to go for it, but I am concerned about having an op for my abnormal cells.

In 2004 I had my regular smear done which came back as mild chancges to my cells.I was told to come back in 6 month time to see if the cells had changed any... and I didn't! I am totally scared of smears and have a bit of a phobia so I left it and didn't think muhc more about it.

As I am 28 now, I wanted to make sure my health is in the best order poss as I would like kids soon (need to find a man first, but that's the hard part!)so I went back and within a week they came back as severe changes.

I have been to hosp today for my pre-op and they have told me the side effects of having the op (as they always have to!! ) and apart from the normal "bleeding etc etc etc" there's 1 in a 100 chance of becoming infertile, miscarrying or/and early labor.

Now the latter I am not too worried about, but I am scared out of my mind with the first two!

I have had abortions in the past which I fetl bullied into and always worried if one day I can't have kids because I want them SO much!

My stance on it is, I'd rather have a happy and short life with kids than a long one without... may sound selfish but they would mean the world to me!

Can anyone elaborate a little more on these statistics or/and the side effects of having this op in relation to not having kids??

    Thanks

You are trying to play God with your body and it's not going to be a good choice if you decide not to go ahead with the operation. You may not have the opportunity to have enough time to find the guy, get pregnant, and live long enough to have it or see it grow up. It sounds like whatever the cell problem is, it has definitely gotten to the point where your doctor wants to operate. The cells didn't just change overnight but over time. No, your having abortions had nothing to do with the problem either. It was just something within your system that has decided to come out now. If you did have a child somehow, not having the operation would esentially mean the child would be motherless in short order. That is truly selfish on your part if you ask me.

You have many other options other than having kids the 'natural way'. There are a lot of kids that are already here on this earth just aching to have a wonderful mommy like you. Have your operation and get better. Then find yourself a man and look into adoption as you will be around to see the child grow up, marry and have grandkids for you to fawn over.

I, too have had several abnormal paps with mild cell changes and dysplasia, always followed by colposcopies and cervical biposies. You didn't mention having this done... have you?
Also, which procedure do you doctors want to perform? LEEP or a Cone biposy? Either way, I feel that if you're comfortable with your doctor, you'll have no problem conceiving and carrying children one day. Have the procedure, just be sure you have a good doctor.

    Hi And24!

Thanks so much for your message :-)

I went for a colpolscopy the other day but didn't have the biopsy done due to how scared I was - hence why it took 4 years to just go back!! They took some pics etc and that was it!

I am due to have the LETZ procedure which is the wire loop. I am just terrified of not having kids as the statistics are pretty high one in hundred??

Well, I guess it's weird to me that they'll do the LETZ without having the biopsy done, but if you've got severe cellular changes, it's probably best you have the sugery done.
To me, your odds of having children are high. 99% chance that you'll be able to conceive and carry children without any problems. Look at it that way! :)
I'm sure you know, cervical cancer is one of the slowest progressing cancers there is. But that doesn't mean you should risk letting it progress any further, then you'll encounter real troubles with pregnancy. Think of it like this: The longer you wait, the more of your cervix is overtaken by abnormal cells, which means more of your cervix will need to be removed. The more cervix removed, the more complications arise with pregnancy. I hope this helps you :)

I had the LOOP procedure or LEEP with the wire loop and they did a biopsy at that time and scheduled me for another PAP to make sure that they got everything (the bad or abnormal cells). I would recommend getting this done. I have read the statistics on miscarriages and child birth due to the procedure but not doing anything at all and letting the situation get worst lessens your chances more than the procedure. They will numb you and it will be over with in about 20 minutes. Then just go home and rest you might have discharge from the dye they use slight bleeding and cramping but it doesn't last but about a day.
