I saw this movie as a kid in the 80s sometime and for some reason parts of it stuck with me but I don't remember the title.
I'm pretty sure it was all puppets. There were all these dogs, I think, or weasels or something and they were dressed up and walked around like people and lived in this house. I think they were aristocrats. There was a little girl there too and maybe the dogs were her foster parents or something, but she was less a guest and more of a prisoner. Mean dogs. She was often warned that if she weren't asleep by midnight, the sandman would tap on her window and she would disappear into his sack. One night the girl can't find her doll and she can't sleep without it so she searches the house. The sandman comes, floating past the windows on the street. I can't recall whether he gets the girl or not.
The only other thing I can remember is that outside the theatre there was like a billboard with images of the puppet characters, as if they were celebrity actors or something. I'm pretty sure it scared me into going to bed early for a year or so. But, to be fair, I had to remove the TV from my bedroom after watching ringu.
