For answering your question hell depends on your religion. So if you tell us what religion you want an answer from someone should be able to help you.

The idea of nine circles of (Christian) Hell comes from Dante's Divine Comedy. I'm not personally aware of any mention of this type of structure for the Christian afterlife before Dante, though the idea of punishment or reward being suited to the individual's life is not a new one.

    Hell in the Islamic religion
    ---------------------------------------------
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell#Islam

    Islam
    Main article: Jahannam

Muslims believe in jahannam (in Arabic: جهنم) (which comes from the Hebrew word gehennim and resembles the versions of Hell in Christianity). In the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, there are literal descriptions of the condemned in a fiery Hell, as contrasted to the garden-like Paradise (jannah) enjoyed by righteous believers.

In addition, Heaven and Hell are split into many different levels depending on the actions perpetrated in life, where punishment is given depending on the level of evil done in life, and good is separated into other levels depending on how well one followed God while alive.

There is an equal number of mentions of both Hell and paradise in the Qur'an, which is considered by believers to be among the numeric miracles in the Qur'an.

The Islamic concept of Hell is similar to the medieval Christian view of Dante. However, Satan is not viewed as Hell's ruler, merely one of its sufferers. The gate of Hell is guarded by Maalik also known as Zabaaniyah. The Quran states that the fuel of Hellfire is rocks/stones (idols) and human beings.

Names of Hell according to Islamic Tradition based on the Quranic ayah and Hadith:
    Jahim
    Hutamah
    Jahannam
    Ladza
    Hawiah
    Saqor
    Sae'er
    Sijjin
    Zamhareer

Although generally Hell is often portrayed as a hot steaming and tormenting place for sinners there is one Hell pit which is characterized differently from the other Hell in Islamic tradition. Zamhareer is seen as the coldest and the most freezing Hell of all, yet its coldness is not seen as a pleasure or a relief to the sinners who committed crimes against God. The state of the Hell of Zamhareer is a suffering of extreme coldness of blizzards ice and snow which no one on this earth can bear.

The lowest pit of all existing Hells is the Hawiyah which is meant for the Hypocrites and two-faced people who claimed to believe in Allah and His messenger by the tongue but denounced both in their hearts. Hypocrisy is considered to be the most dangerous sin of all despite the fact that Shirk (association of God with His creation) is the greatest sin viewed by Allah.

The Qur'an also says that some of those who are damned to Hell are not damned forever, but instead for an indefinite period.

Even though in Islam, the devil, or shaytan, is created from fire, he suffers in Hell because Hellfire is 70 times hotter than the fire of this world. It was also said that Shaytan is derived from shata, (literally `burned'), because it was created from a smokeless fire.

*Layers of hell* is a Dark Ages/Middle Ages concept! Some people have very gory imaginations and like to dwell on fantasy!

There is no hell unless you think being buried when dead is hell.

Dante's Inferno is well worth reading. If I remember right, there are 9 circles with the devil being at the bottom with his 3 mouths chewing up Brutus, Cassius and Judas. I think it is interesting who the author puts in Satan's mouth. Most folks today would say, "Who?"

Also. I find it interesting that he thinks fraudsters are worse and deserve a lower level of hell that murderers and rapists (the violent.) He was screwed over by an associate, so that memory must have been fresh in his mind.

It is difficult to read, but if you get a textbook or guide that can give you assistance while reading, you will find it is extremely interesting.

Jesus Christ does not want anyone to go to Hell because he loves all the people in the world so much that he died on the cross for our sins. That's how much God loves us that he sent his only son into the world to die for us even though we are not worthy. Hell is a very real place in the center of the earth and it goes down 3,500 feet into the ground. Heaven is also a very real place. Just because we have not seen it does not make it any less real then it is. A lot of people have not been to Europe but it is still real. Jesus Christ came into the world to save the lost from Hell, he is the way, the truth and the life and no person comes to the Father {God} except through Jesus Christ. YES, there are different parts in Hell. There are people that have been to Hell that Jesus has took there so they can come back and tell people on earth what it is like and that he loves us and does not want us to go there but we have free will. Jesus Christ does not force us to love and listen to him. We have a choice to receive him into our hearts and listen to him as our Lord and Saviour or to not and then if we never give our hearts and lives to him and we die in our sins then those people will go to Hell. Look up these websites about the people that have been to Hell and listen to what they say and read the Bible. There are many places in the Bible that talk about Hell and what it is like. The Bible says in the last days that he will show people the hidden places, Heaven and Hell, and he will send them back to tell people about them. It is not about religion, it is about a relationship with Jesus Christ, he is not a religion, he is the son of the Almighty God. Jesus loves and died for us all. Give your life to him, the Bible says today is the day of salvation, there is no assurance of tomorrow.

I believe the concept of layers because I believe Hell will be worse than a nagging thought of the things you did wrong in your life and that will in a sense determine 'your degree of heat'
Sort of much the same way as when you get overheated by emotions. Only the after life I don't think anybody can truly explain in words.
