The two arw causes by different viruses, although in the same family. Herpes, the cause of cold sores and genital herpes, is caused by the herpes simplex virus while shingles is caused by vaicella zoster, the chickenpox virus. Have you have sores on your lips or genitals before? The shingles may have worn down your immune system, leaving you prone to an outbreak of herpes. Sometimes, people have very mild initial outbreaks of herpes, so mild they don't even notice the symptoms.
