It may seem like a stupid question, but one that a lot of people should ask, as the number of ladder injuries is directly related to the improper technique used when using one.

To begin with it is important that you have your ladder set up properly. Insure that the ladder extends at least three rungs above the edge of your roof and that the ladder is on a 1:4 slant, which means that the ladder base should be 1 feet away from the vertical for every 4 feet of elevation. Example: If you have a ten foot ladder the base should be 2 and 1/2 feet away from the perpendicular position.
When ascending or descending, it is important that you are always facing your ladder and have three point contact at all times. Two feet one hand or two hands one foot. This is the industry best practice for ladder use. Don't forget to tie the top of your ladder off to something solid to prevent it from slipping sideways on you. Good Luck

Ladder stabilizers are a good investment as well. It's a U shaped bar that attaches to the top of the ladder with rubber tips. It will make a nice contact to the roof.

Make sure the bottom of the ladder is level. Use large pieces of plywood to adjust if necessary.
