I've been living in an apt for about 6 months and about a month after moving in, the toilet will overflow occasionally, and has been getting progressively worse as the weather has turned cold. I've poured everything available to me from Drano to enzymes to alleviate the problem and plunging it every time, but it only lessens the frequency of an overflow for maybe a day. This is an older apt, and I took a look inside the tank the other day, and it was black where the water is. I'm getting very frustrated because my landlord isn't doing anything about it and it is overflowing everyday. Please help, I'm sick of washing towels to clean up the mess!

Fixing a plogged drain is not a tenant responsibility, it's the landlords. Tell him so and threaten to leave based on the fact that your lease provides you with a liveable environment. If you waqnt to take it a bit less militant you could buy/rent a toilet auger and rod about 4', anything further down you really should not mess with in a rental.

Look for the part about habitability. He can't give you a place where sewage backs up into the living space. Toilet auger is your other option.
