    Engine Stopped
I have a 97 honda civic and while driving to work the engine light came on and stopped. Started back again and drove about a few miles and started to make a clanging noise. Towed it to a shop and mechanic said no oil and someone oil filter had a double gasket and leaked all the oil down.
Can I fix this isuue or the motor is bad. Is it in a fixable state or once you start hearing the sound the engine is damaged. Can I put new gasket and put new oil. Will it work. Or what should I do. Please advise.

I would file a claim against whoever changed the oil and filter last. It appears, to me, that the old oil filter's gasket stuck to the engine block, when the filter was removed. Then, the new filter, with its gasket, could not properly seal. Oil gushed out and the engine is likely damaged.

To help prevent this from happening, the gasket is supposed to be coated with engine oil. Still, it's the mechanics responsibility to account for the old gasket and ensure it doesn't stick to the oil filter seat. Basic stuff.

Can you suggest me how much its going to take to fix the problem. How to go about it fixing it. Local mechanic did the oil change and he refused because it was 30 days after oil change and engine light only came when the car was slowing down about to stop.

I would take the car to Honda and get a written extimate on what's wrong. At this point, I can't be more specific.
