    Think he's asking whether the potatoes and the sweet potatoes began beating one another with clubs, or if they shot at each other...

    ... in my opinion, they shot at each other. Sweet potatoes had to undertake the more feminine title, "sweet" potato, while the victorious camp took the gender nonspecific, potato.

    Humans have been growing and domesticating plants and animals for 9,500 years, much farther back in time than the Romans. So if by civilized food, you mean food grown on farms, the answer is yes. They had beef, bread, beer, wine, salads, things like that. Definitely civilized!
