Select cancel to ignore the prompt to format.
Go to "My Computer" / right click drive and select Explore.
If this does not show your files then (if usb or other) connect the drive to a different port.

    Try a different cable.
Try connecting to a friends computer.

Use a data recovery company to recover the files.
e.g. Data Recovery Service London UK, Hard Drive Data Recovery and RAID Recovery (never personally used them.)
FAT16, FAT32, NTFS data recovery software - do it yourself data recovery and digital image recovery. (is a do it yourself one)
(I do not endorse one particular data recovery company and do not guarantee any success on their part)

Here's a possibility. One of our External drives has a problem if it is not removed properly. If it is just removed with out shutting down the device in windows first it won't recognize next time we plug it in.

For it to recoginize we had to power off the external drive and then pull the power cable out of the back. We waited about 10 seconds plugged everything back in and it started working.

A lot of people I work with, don't realize they have to shut it down with the little icon on the taskbar before unplugging the USB cable.
