We put in a new sink, my dad told us to put silicone sealant between the actually sink and the drain assembly. Then tighten the assembly.. . How long does it usaully take for those sealants to dry?

Usually about 24 hrs. should be efficient, look on th caulk tube for specifics, they usually give you the set up time frame. Have a great day!

You do not want to use silicone in that location. You need to use plumbers putty. This will allow for the thermal shock that is bound to happen and provides a good seal that will be there for years to come. Stop, take it back apart and fix it right. Plumbers putty is available at any home improvement store for less that 5 dollars. They you can put the sink together and use it the same day.

Some sealants are "silicone rich" but not pure silicone. Silicone rich sealants are usually water soluble and this is the wrong sealant for this application. Pure silicone usually smells of vinegar and will cure in about 24 hrs. I have seen silicone used in this application very successfully however I am a plumbing professional and only use Plumbers Putty as mentioned above. If it were me I would wait to see if the silicone works- -if it does great if not get some plumbers putty.
