    Toilet won't stop running
    Good morning all,

I have a crane toliet that is almost 10 years old. When I flush the toliet it does fill up but when it gets the full line it still runs. I mean it doesn't overflow but it does still run. What can I do to stop it from running?

There should be a float ball or float on the shaft, take lid off toilet, flush it and you'll see the float go down when it comes up it usually shuts off the water, there should be a screw adjustment to lower float to shut off earlier, tell me if this works.

The water does stop running but it still sounds like it's running. What can that sound be? I checked to see and the water have stopped. But what could the noise be? It kind of sound like air escaping from a tire.

It might not be stoping totally, pull up the arm or plunger gently with your hand and if that noise disappears then it probably needs a very slight adjustment, sometimes it goes down the overflow tube inside the tank oh so slightly.

I'm not sure of what you mean. I lifted the tank whn I flush I see the float drop and then I see it rise once the tank is full. I checked and there is no water flowing after the tank is full. At first the water was still running when the tank was full now it isn't but it sounds like it is.

Sometimes the float doesn't go all the way up it gets hung up just a tich before shut off even though it looks like its at the top, pull the float up torwards the top a little carfully to see if the noise quits if it does then that's the problem and you need to adjust the float just a little and then that sound should go away, sorry if I'm confusing you but explaining these things can be tricky, I wish I could draw a picture and show you what I mean but you can't do that at this sight that I know of? Good luck- I hope I explained it a little better this time.

The float is all the way up. It sounds like the water is coming from the top of the float where the black cap is. I took a picture of it.

The seals probably need replacing - that's what happened to mine

It could be the seal I guess under the black cap, I have never replaced the seal,I usually end up replacing the whole unit that the float is on there not very expensive, not very hard to replace either I did one for my mother in law. Just remember to turn water off under toilet before you do anything and make sure all the water is out of the tank.

It is new. We replaced the whole thing about 3 weeks ago. I wouldn't think that is mess up that quickly. Even after we replaced it we didn't use the toliet a lot because the flap doesn't fit and we would have to put the flap in place everytime we flush so the tank can fill. Do you know if the black cap comes off? Is there anything else I can do besides the seal?

First things first Mom. What type of ballcock do you have? Float ball on a rod or a can that slides up and down? Did you cut the ring off the flapper before you hooked it up ? Does your flapper linkage have 1/4" of play when the flapper's seated? Back to you. Regards, Tom

Good morning Tom, I have taken a picture of it. Go to page one and you should see a picture. My brother hooked it up for me. I don't think there is a ring on it.

He means the ring on the flapper, the device that doesn't seat properly for you, it shoul seat down all the way, I didn't know the flap wasn't seating. That puts a new light on it.
