    How do you identify existing cpvc or pvc pipe.
    I have a solar heater on my swimming pool. The three way control valve has failed and I need to replace it. The manufacturer sells both pvc and cpvc valves. How do I know which one I have?

    PVC is white and CPVC is yellowish or cream colored. CPVC is chlorinated PVC commonly used for draining water and supply lines. You probably do not need CPVC for your pool. Either will work equally as well.

    How old is old? Check your diameter. CPVC will have about the same OD as copper, a 3/4'' of either will be about 7/8'' OD. 3/4'' PVC will be closer to 1''. How hot is the water at the valve? You may need CPVC.

    Check the astm # on the pipe if all else fails then call a plumber and ask him to referance it or even a supply house also all pipe pvc cpvc copper whatever if it meets then stand for use in potable water it probably meets the standard for use in hot water as well so according to standards they will all work equally as well

    And if all that fails to inform you as to the type simply look at the markings on the pipe in question. Regards, Tom
