One week should have a warranty. Also did you try it on a friends computer. Did you unplug it and reboot without it and plug it back in to see if it would plug and play. Google for troubleshooting or contact the MadDog company help desk, they can tell you what to look for in the Registry to see if it is set up for DVD or for burning, done that before. Worse case you will have to download some other software to make it burn with the other software, done that before too.

Do you have any DVD burning software? The built-in XP burning software doesn't work at all for me... also, my DVD-RW is listed as "CD Drive" under My Computer.

Unplug it, reboot, wait until everything is up and running and then plug it into one of your USB ports (assuming it's a USB external drive.) And make sure you've got some type of burning software to test it (like Nero, etc.)

If all else fails, check out the manufacturer's support site at Mad Dog Multimedia Support | Support Welcome Page

Sometimes it is recognised as a CD player until a DVD is put in then it will be recognised as a DVD player but you are having other troubles also. I used CDBurnerXPPro, when my one tower would not burn, I can't remember if this did DVD or not but NERO does. Go to downloads.com, search for whatever and see how many downloads each one has had and choose one with the most downloads, very popular one.
