Petty Larceny Statute of Limitations in New York
If a person has not been charged as of yet for petty larceny in the state of New York but there is an investigation underway, how long do the investigators have to complete the investigation. The investigator knows I am a single mom, have no money for a lawyer and are trying to get me to admit to a crime I did not commit. I am currently on 3-year probation for a similar charge which was Identity Theft-2nd. I plead guilty to it because I had never been in trouble before and did not want my children taken away from me. I know the person who did the crime which still does not help because the investigators feel if I know the person I played a hand in it. I am not getting a clear idea from anyone whether I will be violated or not or if I have a shot with a prior record at remaining jail free. I hear of felony probation and probation being added on to probation but I need for someone to give me a clearer direction. I don't want to lose my children and if it helps I'd rather plead guilty to remain jail free. Can someone please offer some sound advice?

I've read your other post and it seems you have done some things that may significantly reduce your credibility in the eyes of the investigators.

But this post is confusing. You state the investigation is still underway and that "you didn't do it". IF you didn't do it, cooperate with the investigator and they will find who did commit. Then you will be cleared and not face violation.

You also confess here that you know who did, and there's a chance if you knowingly withhold this from investigator's, you could be charged with aiding/accessory.

    Get a lawyer.

I told the investigator who I believe done the crime and even though that person has a long record they feel that because I'm a single mom I was desperate and committed the crime myself plus they admitted to me that despite the fact that it's their job, they do not want to do the footwork. Also, the person who committed the crime, left shortly afterwards and now lives in another state. Many people have told me to get a lawyer but, I am a single mom. If I could afford a lawyer, I would not be posting on this site. I post on this site hoping to get a clear answer.
