Co-signing laws in Georgia
Hello, I am Vera and I cosigned a store credit card for a friend :-(.
She moved and I cannot find her. I need to get out of cosigning and am willing to pay the loan now that is small and get out of it. The Store will not give me any information about her and they do not want to give me a copy of the co-signing paper I did few years back. Does anyone knows about GA laws about reversing a co-sigment Please help me with any advise you might have or direct me to see what others did in a case like mine.
I want to get out of it and have no idea how to do it, any advise?
Thanks,
Vera.

Hello Vera:
If you pay the bill off, you can cancel the account. Do so in writing, sent certified, return receipt requested.

Thanks, I will never cosign anything at all ever again in my life, that is for sure!
Do you think I should get an attorney to do this? I really wish to have proof and a letter telling me the account has been closed. I also wish they gave me her lates address and last name-- so I can find her and take her to court as she signed a paper for me telling me she would repay me if she did not pay her bills on time.
Thanks,
Vera.

Hello again, hope:
You don't need an attorney. Your letter informing them to close the account IS proof. Make sure you are paying off the bill entirely and mention that in your letter along with the words in large capital letters if you like, CLOSE THIS ACCOUNT.
After you do this, if they let your flakey friend charge some more, that's going to be on them. They're not going to help you find your friend, either.

I would get in writing from the store that they will take your name off the account if you pay it in full. If you can't get it in writing, you need an attorney.
Remember collection people will lie to you just to get the money paid, so if it is not in writing, I would get an attorney before I paid a penny.
