I have a double sink , one side has a disposal and is not leaking. The other side seems to be leaking around what looks to me like a large black washer attached to the bottom of the sink.
Is there anyway I can repair this myself? I tried tightening it , but that made it worse . Just going to use the garbage disposal side till I figure this out .

You need a new basket strainer you can get at home depot

Stuff you will need
Basket stariner for kit. Sink, small cup of plumber putty, pipe thread sealent , channel locks...

1 take old basket strainer off... ( take note as to how it comes off as the new one will go on the same way)

2 take new one apart and put rolled putty around entire area where strainer meets sink then press down lighty.
3 and then from the bottom put on the rubber then paper gasket and then the basket then tighten the hell out of the nut... putty should have squeezed out from the top a and now hook up you p-traps and you are as good as new...
I am also sure the friendly staff at home depot can show you haow to do this as well

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it my best shot. Any special tool to tighten that? It looks bigger than the wrenches I have . Or am I looking at the wrong thing to tighten?

Just a big pair of channel lock for the nut on bottom

Ohhh, OK , think I got what you mean. Tough learning from knowing nothing of plumbing to trying this, but I am pretty resourceful and sounds like a challenge :)

I really doubt you need a whole new basket strainer, just the gasket. You are far more likely to find good help at a regular hardware such as Ace or True Value.

So I should try that first maybe? Do I need that channel lock.

You need something big enough to grip the nut on the bottom. It may be quite difficult to loosen it. If you could turn it to tighten it, use whatever you used for that. The Channellock is a brand of a large plier like thing. I have a 16'' one I use for many purposes.

You will need to loosen boththe nut that holds the basket strainer to the sink, and the one that holds the tail stock to the strainer. Get a new gasket for it too.

May be best to take the basket strainer off and take it to the hardware store and make sure you get the right gaskets.

I Too, doubt that you need a new drain, a new neoprene gasket and fiber ant-friction washer is all you shouldl need
The putty seal under the lip of the drain has lost its seal and the drain,(see image ) must be reset. James and labman have it right on the installation. Just follow their instructions, and yes, you will need a large set of channel lock pliers for the big nut on the bottom and a small jar of plumbers putty. Good luck, Tom

I guess maybe lab man and speed ball are right but when I go into a house with a problem such as yours I replace the whole basket strainer because I do not want to have any excuses for leaks for a "CALLBACK" so everything is new so I therefore know its right

You're looking at the correct nut to tighten,(see image). You will need a large set of pump pliers or Channel Locks to do this. Buy a set. It will be much cheaper then paying for a service call.

To each his own. As a rule I don't even have to change out the washers. If the basket strainer looks good,( no dents or scratches) I remove it, clean up the old putty seal and reinstall it like a new installation. If it don't leak then I've saved the customer some $. If it does I simply pop in a new one. But nine times out of ten it's the putty seal that's gone bad. Regards, Tom
