Sonia has to stop thinking of herself and start thinking of the dog. Otherwise, she is being cruel, and I don't think she would want to be that way.

I've had to put down several wonderful cats so I know how she feels, but she has to think of her dog and how he might feel. Certainly she doesn't want him to starve to death which is what is beginning to happen.

It's much to early to tell her this, but what about adopting an older dog that needs a home, sort of in honor of this dog? Or maybe that's not good because you would be going through this same thing again in not too many years. Or is there an animal shelter near you where Sonia could volunteer and bring all sorts of doggy wisdom to the group?

Almost always, we outlive our pets, and that loss can be one of the worst we ever experience. My best wishes to both of you.

If there is nothing the vet can do about any of the problems, then it is time to let him go. I treasure every good day with my 14 year old Lab Aster. A year ago, her mother quit eating. Our friends brought her here for one last visit, and then had her put to sleep. When a dog gets to where it no longer is enjoying life, then it is time.
