    New range electric circuit
I just purchased a new electric range and noticed it needs a 40 amp circuit. The line that is already run to the current range outlet is only 30 amps. How big a problem is this and will I be constantly tripping the breaker?
    Thanks Paul Brown

    Paul,

If your new stove requires 40 Amps, then the breaker, conducting cable, outlet will all need to be changed.

You cannot run 40 amp on a 30 amp line. First reason is fire. The cable rated for thirty amp cannot sustain a 40 amp line. The additional amperage will cause the wire to heat and eventually breakdown the insulation and here comes the fire department.

For 40 amp, the wire circuit from the breaker to the range needs 8 AWG cable at a minimum and a 40 Amp 220 VAC breaker.
