    Handyman business
    Hi everybody.
I am very handy and want to start my own business in home remodeling or as handyman. Do I need to get a license for handyman business? And as I know before applying for license I have to purchase liability insurance. Is all this info right or am I missing something? How and where can I get my license and liability insurance? I leave in NJ.

    Thanks.

A site proposed by a governing body will not explain tax write-offs and deductions available to the new business owner.

I went to a reputable accountant, someone with whom I was going to work with for the long haul, and took the information he suggested( like the type of record keeping book he suggested,so he could rapidly go over my accounts, costing me less for his services... etc)

This alone saved me tremendous headaches,It was an expense I would gladly do again if necessary.

Tax laws change regularly, and a good accountant is beyond value when something comes up.

Go to them first, before you get insurance, before you apply for a license that might not be the field you can make money in or cost more because it only focuses on a certain field of work.

    I hope this helps,

Both good and helpful answers above!

I would like to add, that two really great sites to help you in starting a small business are SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business" and http://www.sba.gov/ There is tons of information on those two sites.

One of the businesses that I do, is that I am a handyman. Where I live and work, and since I operate out of my home, I don't need to have a license. I realize this might not be the same where you live and work.

Concerning the liability insurance, when you do eventually get around to getting it, you might want to consider going to an insurance agency that has many carriers for insurance from which you can choose. That way, you can choose a company where you can get the best coverage for the best price. Where I got mine, was through the insurance part of a very large real estate business. They had over twenty carriers for the type of insurance that I need.

I know that you haven't asked about advertising, but I thought that you might like a tip on some free advertising that you can use. Other than by word of mouth, most of my business comes from the free advertising that I do on the Internet. If you are interested in that, most of the best sites for doing so are listed on the following link.
