Anyway last year ,aug1 2006, I signed into a lease with another person for a $600 a mo. Apartment in ia. Paid first and last mo rent upfront and we were both on the lease. However about 6 months through the lease rm told me they were moving out w/ someone else. I talked them into taking over the apartment and me moving out. So I sign a sublease and they begin living together and I move out. I am at this point caught up on bills and move out without owing any money for utilities and am told I'll get my deposit back when lease is expired. So this year August comes around and I am not told anything about the deposit. After a few futile calls to the landlord going unreturned I finally talk to him about mid oct. and he told me the deposit had been sent to my roommate with both our names on the check and my portion would be on there. So I go about contacting my roommate and I am told the person I subleased to is claiming they are entitled to some money because I left halfway through, and also because they had an apartment they were deserting. I am not able to get my exroomate ,with the deposit, to go get the check cashed. What can I do about this?

Sue the apartment in small claims court for your entire deposit. They made a mistake.
