Trying to get orange email via virgin in outlook
    Hi all,

I have windows XP with Outlook. I have recently changed ISP. I was with Orange/Wanadoo.

When we moved house I took out virgin. Plugged the computer in and was still able to send and receive email via my Orange email account.(at this point I had not changed anything) Then I insterted the Virgin disk and ever since I have been unable to SEND email via the orange email account. But I can still receive.

I have tried changing the outgoing mail sever to mail.virgin.net and kept the incoming as pop.orangehome.co.uk.

    However, this didn't work.

Is there a soltuion for me to still be able to use the Orange email account to send and receive but still have virgin as my ISP?

    Thanks in advance,

    Will

As you have found, you can set your incoming mail server to receive mail from any ISP. However, if you have terminated service from Orange, at some point they will stop allowing you to use the email address you had with them and so you will no longer get mail.

At that point you will have to decide what you are going to do. You can change to a virgin email address, you can use a web based address like gmail or you can use a mail forwarder like pobox. The second and third of these options will allow you to keep your email address in future when you change ISPs avoiding further hassle.

When you change your email address, be sure to send the notification from the new address so that it is automatically stored by recipients.

Now to your outgoing mail. As you have discovered, almost all ISPs block you from sending via a third party outgoing server. Sending via the Virgin outgoing server should have worked, maybe there was something wrong with your settings?

If you use gmail of course you send via webmail so your outgoing server settings are not an issue.

If you use a forwarder, they have their own outgoing sasl server which you can set up - you will get instructions on how to do this from them.
