I am in the process of installing a bathroom in my basement. I took some picutures of the three drain pipes in the floor, two of which come up out of the concrete. One is for the water closet and the other I assume is for a vanity. The 2" drain pipe below the cement closest to the outer wall is for a tub/shower. I want to put the shower in the other corner of the bathroom so I cut a trench in the concrete as shown.

I have several questions:

1) Does the p-trap have to be directly under the shower drain or can it be at the other end as I have in my picture?

2) The vent for all three would come off the vanity 2" drain pipe sticking out of the floor next to the water closet pipe. Where do I vent it to? The existing vent going through the ceiling or can I just vent it to the back side of the house?

What you have installed is called a "running trap" and while the inspector might not be too happy with it your shower's trapped.

You have options here. You may run a vent out through the roof. You may revent back to a existing dry vent or revent back to a roof vent in the attic. If it's impossible to run a vent then consider installing a AAV (Air Admittance Vent). Regards, Tom

Thanks Tom for the answers. How good are AAVs generally and do I need to contact my local inspector to find out if they meet code in this area or is there a website folks can go to? Thanks again!
