Today I bought a new Asus wireless LAN PCI adapter for my desktop computer. I installed the software and hardware for it and found it all to be working out correctly, the program was telling me I had connected to my BT Home-Hub router and had full signal strength, however the windows networking icon on the taskbar and a warning triangle on it and told me there was "limited or no connectivity". I ran the repair for it and this is what it said:

Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed:
Renewing your IP address

Before I had this problem I was using a Belkin Wireless USB adapter with the Home-Hub and I had internet activity.

Can anyone help?

Did you enter the Security key correctly when you tried to connect? This is probably the most common thing that happens when you get the Limited or No Connectivity message on wireless.

If you go into Control Panel, Network Connections, the new wireless adapter, and the middle tab on there (I think it's called wireless), you shuold be able to delete the connection to your router, and then add it again, being sure to use the correct key.

Doh!

I was beginning to think this was a serious problem, and I went back to the security key page and found I had entered an 'automatic generation passphrase' instead of the manual assignment wireless key. Thanks for making me go back retsoksirhc, the only slight worry I have now is under my IP config page of the software program. It says;

Lease Obtained: Wed Oct 24 20:01:48 2007
Lease Expired: Thur Oct 25 20:01:48 2007

If you could quickly reply and settle my troubles by telling me it makes no difference and isn't going to affect anything, then I would be very grateful.

It makes no difference, and isn't going to affect anything.

The DHCP server leases you out an IP when you connect. Your computer will check halfway through whether it can renew the lease. If it can, it does. If not, it checks again (I think 80% of the way through the lease). If it can renew, it does. If the lease expires, it will get a new lease with a different address. The lease just comes from your router, not from your ISP or anything.

In a router configuration page, you can specify the lease time, but lease times usually don't matter.

Thanks for the answers, but I have one last question; How can I disable CheckSumLoad? During some internet activities - mainly gaming- I get a fairly high ping, whereas some of my friends who also use similar wireless adapters have no trouble. The problem gets worse when I run two internet programs at once, for example a game and ventrillo. One of my friends told me that wireless cards sometimes try to send information in clusters of packets rather then a continuous stream and this can cause high latency and lag. Apparently this can be fixed by disabling something called 'CheckSumLoad' or similar. Anyone got any ideas about this problem? Or if disabling CheckSumLoad will work?

By the way, I still have full signal strength and connection, and apparently the speed is at 54Mbps.

You could try pinging your router with increasingly high packet sizes especially from a wired connection. This can easily rule out cabling issues.

Ping 127.0.0.1 -l 2048 -t

This will ping 127.0.0.1 (the loopback address) until stopped. You should substitute the IP address of your router. I'd also try any power of 2 like 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192).

There doesn't appear to be the parameter in question in the advanced tab of the device manager nor a TCP/IP parameter which can be changed in the registry.

If you cannot get to your router reliably then you have to look at cabeling, the router itself, the adapter and the channel (interference issues).
