I have had metal rod/screws placed not my back from scoliosis.

I always wondered.

Can these rods/screws ever move or become loose over time? Or will they stay in place no matter what?

Also is my back in any more danger of becoming worse?

I'm guessing your doctor would be able to answer any of the questions for you.

I'm no doctor, but I'm assuming the rods and screws fuse with your bone and you are relatively safe from further back damage, at least caused by the surgery and the rods/screws.

Hopefully I see him nov 12. So far its been a year since my surgery but I'm very active so I am afraid of the rods moving around and what not.

You're welcome. They would have told you about any restrictions you had to abide by if they thought you might harm yourself, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Yeah me too.. Esspecially today scared me because I did a back bend (http://www.vancouveryoga.com/assets/...bend_fiona.jpg) and this girl like tried to carry me and I fell.
I got so angry because why would she even try to carry me when I'm doing something like that?
Like she tried to pick me up from my back, while it was arched backwards... with one hand also. Like she just tried to scoop me up ><

So from that I have been freaking out because no body has held me from my back like that and I just hope she didn't damage it.. and if she did I'm sueing :D hahah

Hi, I am not a doctor either however I had the same spinal fusion 2 years ago and am studding to be a nurse. The rods and screws they put in your back can come undone however it's a very small chance and could take something like a being hit by a bus to move them. The rods are very secure and will only be moved by come kind of insane strong force.

I don't want to be scary here, but the reality with Scoliosis fusion surgeries, is that roughly 40% of patients will become legally disabled in 7-10 years after surgery (and also the percent of patients that will require an additional surgery within 10-20 years... it's surprising). You can find this actual research if you do a little searching around pubmed.gov, the gov't database for health literature.

The spine is designed to move, so, if you prevent it from moving by a fusion surgery, you face a number of degenerative changes... including disc problems (bulges, herniations, etc.) and biomechanics changes in the neck and lowback (or non-fused areas of the spine).

A major component to Scoliosis that is overlooked by the medical world is the loss of the normal curves from the front-to-back (the neck curve, midback, and lowback curve). Most Scoliosis patients have a significant decrease in the neck and/or lowback curves. Medically, this is rarely addressed. So, the problem that is driving the Scoliosis curve is left untouched, while metal rods are used to fuse the part of the spine with Scoliosis. The symptoms are 'fixed' but the 'cause' is never addressed.
