    IPv6 folks
Anyone interested and/or working with IPv6?
I am full time with IPv6 and looking for others to join in with their experiences at different levels and different Operating systems.
I mostly deal with Cisco, Juniper and Microsoft but dabble in other areas too.
    Any takers?

    Hi Jim

I think we can share our views.

I am doing my research project on IPv4 to IPv6 migration services. Could you help me out with the following questions?

    1. When is it the right time to migrate ?
    2. Are telcos planning for migration any time during 2008 - 2012?

    Regards,
    Manas

The US Dept of Defense has already given a mandate for all the organizations to migrate to IPv6. But what about Europe & Asia?

    FYI
OMB (the US government folks that provide each agency their annual budget) has mandated all government agencies have v6 enabled on their backbones by June 2008. The wording provided by OMB seems to be up to each agencies interpretation so results will definitely vary.

As far as the rest of the world - Most places like Japan, Europe, and China have already upgrade to some level of v6. Many of the list-serves and various v6 forums indicate these countries have already upgraded and are in full swing with v6. The question I have is: How is it possible to be running v6 in full production as since Cisco, Microsoft, Juniper, and Various versions of Unix has just started providing real usable v6 products? Are there other companies providing v6 products that are not available or even talked about in the US or on the web?

MS Win 2003 and XP don't support DHCPv6 so static assignment is the only possible option. These OS do accept a stateless /64 prefix and then perform EUI-64 translation. Until a product called Dibbler written and supported by a European programmer was created it was static assignment for IPv6 address, DNS server, NTP, Gateway etc. - keep in mind the dibbler documentation is totally incorrect so you have to really work hard to get it working. I had dibbler running in my v6 lab.

The nice thing about the Dibbler client is when installed on MS Win2003 and XP, these OS’s will accept any length of v6 prefix address. I know all documentation says each host will use a /64 prefix but I have to experiment with many different configurations to get the entire picture and understanding – after all I am the Sr. Lead IPv6 Network Engineer. Sorry, I am not pushing Dibbler, it’s just that Microsoft will not support these OS’s and expect EVERYONE to just upgrade AGAIN. Sorry I run Vista and find it annoying at best. But Vista does support various length prefix lengths so a plus for Vista.

I run MS Win 2003, XP SP1 and XP SP2, Vista, Cisco routers and switches, Juniper Firewall, NFR analyzer.

I also run BGP 4+ with address-family IPv6 Unicast, EIGRPv6, OSPFv6, QoS. I do not run Mobil or IPSec yet.

    Anyway enough for now-
    Keep the questions /comments coming!

Many Telcos have already migrated. I worked with Verizon and used their DNSv6 services several years ago.

Verizon is planning to complete its worldwide network by 2009 as the sources say. It has deployed the IPv6 over its MPLS network. There are several ways for the migration and RFCs describe them. Which mechanism do you think will be in greater use? However, I have a perception that since MPLS is deployed worldwide by telcos, this will be the preferred mechanism.

I was just wondering what will be the cost of implementation of IPv6 migration. But couldn't figure it out. Do you have any idea what will be the cost of migration, which the telcos say verizon or BT or ATT has to spend on the migration. Of course, it has to happen in stages.

Coming to the technology, Vista seems to be supporting to a greater extent and I agree with you. IBM has also it several platforms supporting IPv6 protocol. Still it has to come out with much more applications which are yet to be IPv6 compliant.

    Keep posting your inputs.
