Moen faucet in shower but no hot water coming out. Only been in the house a year and a half and it was brand new. It did work for a while and now it does not. Any ideas? Thanks.

Shut the water off to the valve and open it up. Check and clean the inlet ports on the cartridge. Before you button up turn the water back on for a minute to flush out the supplies.
As a rule this complaint is caused by minerals built up in your water heater that have found their way into the hot water main and are sucked up into the first faucet/tub/shower valve making a draw.
To prevent this from happening again you must flush your heater on a regular maintenance schedule. Let me show you how. For long life and fewer troubles you should keep your heater clear of mineral build-up by flushing on a regular schedule. Attach a hose to the boiler drain at the bottom of the tank. With the pressure on, open the boiler drain and let it run until the water runs clear. You will see a spurt of red,(rust) followed by white grains,(lime or calcium carbonate). This shouldn't take more then a few minutes. Do this monthly to keep it clear. Now flush out your hot water lines on ALL fixtures. Now pull each aerator and clean the screens. Be sure you put them back togather the same way you took them out. Don't forget to flush it out every month. Your heater will thank you for it. Hope this helps, Tom

My moen shower faucet (5 years old) is only running very hot water. I also have a second Moen shower faucet that has very little water running through it (both hot and cold work). Is there some way to get to the hot water situation on faucet #1 and a way to correct the limited water flow on faucet #2?

Mark, you should start a new thread. However, I need more info. Does your moen faucet turn on by pulling knob out and adjusting hot and cold by turning right or left [chateau] or does it only turn from right [off] to left? [positemp]

My Moen turns CCW to turn on and hot to cold and does not go in and out (only turns).

1st valve, running hot. Try this, take the handle off and rotate the brass stem 180 degrees and reassemble the handle. On the second one, sounds like a flow restricter in the shower head. Take the head off and make sure the shower arm does not move. If the arm gets loose it can leak in the wall. See what volume you got with the open pipe only. Check the head for flow restricters [which by the way, is illegal to remove. The shower police can get ya] and check for debris at flow restricter screen.

I rotated the stem 180 degrees but after reassembling the handle, it still ran hot only. Do I need to replace the cartridge kit? The other faucet - I've already looked at the restrictors but when I remove the shower head completely, the water flow is very weak.

OK, you have a positemp by moen. You may have to pull the whole cartridge out 1 inch and rotate the whole cartridge 180 degrees. Buy a new cartridge, read instructions fully before beginning. It can get tricky, try to not break the cartridge. Then use the new cartridge in the weak flow faucet. Let me know if it works.

Sorry to take so long to provide feedback, but I replaced both cartridges and still had the hot only or cold only issue. So I contacted Moen technical support and they actually called me back. They told me to remove the cartridge again, and then shake the cartridge. If it sounded like a spray paint can being shook I was in good shape but if there was not movement or sound, then I needed to remove the metal stem inside the cartridge, remove the plastic end cap and pull out the metal piece that resides inside and clean the inside of the stem and the metal piece I removed. I used a some very fine emory cloth and polished both and put it back together. When I shook it, it rattled like a spray paint can. I reassembled the cartridge, etc and it now works great. I did the same to the other faucett and it works well now also.

I'll be honest though, I'm a little concerned about having to do this every couple of years. How come my parents have a faucett that is original from the 40s or 50s and still works fine? So much for technology..

Thanks very much for the "shake it and if it sounds like a spray paint can being shook" it is fine. I just purchased a brand new branded Moen replacement cartridge ($39 at Home Depot) and the problem with a trickle of cold water persisted. Once I read your post I took the brand new cartidge out and shook it and... no movement or sound. Took a half hour to get things moving, but once I did and replaced it, everything worked properly. So frustrating as it was a brand new cartridge, never would have suspected that was the problem without your post. Thanks!
