The car started fine as usual with no unusual noises so I released Ebrake and went to put it in drive to go. But the column shifter just slide straight through. There was absolutely no resistance what so ever. It goes from park right through to D2 an d back. It slides. I shut it off, checked trans.fluid which was OK then tried again and nothing. It's just not catching or going into any gears at all.
I'm going to to have to be towed obviously to a local garage and I'm new to the area. It would be helpful to have some idea what I'm up against as far as what could be wrong and ball park cost(s) if possible. Can anyone help this women out.

It sounds like the cable or linkage has become disconnected between the shifter and the transmission.

You can check for yourself: open and support the hood. Look down on the driver's side by the steering column. With someone in the car, key on, engine off, have them set the park brake and hold their foot on the brake pedal and move the shifter slowly from park to drive and back to park several times, while you look down on the driver's side and look for a cable or linkage moving back and forth. Likely the plastic ball on the end of the cable/linkage has simply snapped and come off. Unfortunately, the whole cable or lever will probably need replaced. The shop can give you the price.

HE SAID IT but it could also be the steering column shift bowl which would have to be done at a certified gm dealership (pontiac)
