Allergies and Asthma
Visiting family that has animals. They have done everything they could to prevent any problems. I also have been taking more of my asthma medications and have been taking allergy medicine as well. To no avail. I will see a doctor because I can not continue with this. Breathing problems, allergy reactions. Trying to keep clear of all the animals and trying my best to make sure I am feeling good but it is not helping. Taking clariton. Which I thought was the best. Internet friend said to me because I have not been around animals so long my body will react strongly to it, AND THEY WERE RIGHT.
Anybody have any ideas of a better allergy medication or asthma medications that would help. Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure the pseudoephedrine / antihistamines are the right thing all the time. There are too many side-effects possible, to include decreased sex-drive.
Have you tried desensitization? Check with a dermatologist / allergy specialist to see if this allergy of your's is treatable through this method.
It has worked for a few people that I know.. They flat out refused to give up their pets.
Hope you find the right remedy for you dear.

Are these animals in your home? Why can't your visitors keep them out of your home? I have allergies to dogs and cats also. Now the dog I have does not bother me much but I had to resume my allergy shots and I take a claritin daily.
My heart goes out to you, Joe. Hope you do not end up in the emergency room from all this.
Edit: I misread Joe's post to mean he has visiting family with animals. My apoligies.

Joe, I understand that you are in their home visiting, so you can't desensitize as Chery mentioned, it takes too long and you are only there for a short time. While it does work, it's not what you need.
Shy, they are not in his home, he is in theirs.
So, while they try to keep the animals away from you, there is still animal dander in the home that you can't escape.
I feel your pain. When I went home earlier this summer before Dad passed I had the same thing going on as you do. I sneezed, coughed, runny eyes, asthma flared up. It was miserable for the first week.
Do you have your rescue inhaler? Albuterol?
I used my rescue inhaler, Bendaryl for the itchy eyes, sneezing, etc. as well as Sudafed to dry up the secretions. Claratin never worked for me.

In the long run you might try allergy shots.

Guys, he is VISITING family and/or friends. Desensitization takes too long, and allergy shots won't work that quick.
Now, on the other hand, if he wants to attempt to eradicate this problem in the future, this may be his best bet.

It all depends on how serious your asthma and allergy are, if bad, you will just have to stay away from most animals most of your life. You have no real choice

For a long time I've been known to have "colds" very often, but someone gave me on the idea that it might be allergies. I always have a stuffy nose, though some days its worse than others, and I sneeze a lot. And sometimes I'll have itchy eyes. Since I have these pretty much all year, I didn't...
