    Speedometer Calibration
    I am in the North Tx area, and I am needing to get my speedometer calibrated. I have no Idea what this is, but my attorney in Virginia, will not take my case until I have this taken care of.


    Anyone?

    Your speedometer is not accurate it could be due to some change you might have done like putting bigger tires on or changing the rear axle or converting a car from having overdrive to not. I think they have to open the speedometer to set it accurately or change back any change you had done that may have caused it to be off.

    Needs to go to a speedometer shop and they will calibrate it for you. Basically they run the car to a certain speed and then adjust the readings of the speedo to match that speed.

    A few years ago I got a speeding ticket in my old 82 GMC pick-up which has non stock rear end and tire combination. I went to a spedo shop where they installed a little outboard gearbox on the transmission, to compensate for the changes (cost about $100). I took the receipt to the judge, and said I was sorry, and she dismissed the ticket. Good luck.

    I suppose what your really looking for is a statement that either 1) Your speedometer is accurate to within normal limits or 2) The speedometer is was inaccurate by X% over or under and that's it's been corrected.

    I am understanding how and where (in general) I need to go, but I was needing something a little more specific. Like a name of a shop that does it here in North Tx.

    This offers some suggestions as to how to check calibrations and a device to modify them. If your tests show that there isn't a problem then you don't have to go further.

    I remember that when I was in Virginia Beach there was a measured mile for Taxicabs to be able to check their metering systems.

    Go for the hi-tech self rescue: get a GPS (beg, borrow or buy) and go for a ride in a straight line.
