This is normal. Some people can experience swelling for up to 2 weeks, it just depends on the person

If your tongue swells around the top ball of the barbell (bad enough to where you can't even see it), is severely red, or has a yellow/green discharge, this indicates infection and you need to go to the doctor.

As of right now it sounds normal.

**EDIT** - To eliminate confusion, the original question was about the OP getting her tongue pierced 5 days ago and it is still swollen. She wanted to know if that was normal or if she should take it out. She replied by changing the original post.

You don't need to change your question to reply to me, just go to the bottom of the page and reply in the "Answer this Question" box. If you just change what is in the original post it doesn't let me know :)

The indentation from the ball is normal, it will disappear when the piercing heals. It is just caused by the swelling that is present from getting your tongue pierced.

You have to keep in mind that a piercing is wound to your body, so swelling and tenderness is going to be there.

Sea salt is not required for a tongue piercing, that's what the mouthwash is for.

Also, if you get yourself an anti-plaque mouthwash it will reduce the risk of plaque building up onto the jewelry.

I've never been told, or never heard of anyone being told to use sea salt with a tongue piercing. Just make sure you keep the piercing clean with mouthwash, and brush on top of your tongue, all around the barbell, and on the bottom of your tongue, all around the barbell.

To reduce the swelling, take some ibuprofen and eat a lot of ice. This will speed up the process. Don't eat spicy food or chocolate, because these can make the piercing "angry". And try as hard as you can not to play with it: don't click it on your teeth, don't suck on it, etc.

The ingredients in chocolate can increase swelling and prolong healing time. You can eat it after a week, just hold off for two more days :)
