Bath tub trip lever STUCK closed
Our bath tub trip lever is stuck in the "up" position. I've tried to force it, and water will drain very slowly, but the lever doesn't go down. Not sure how it got stuck in the closed position (we have a 5 yr. old and a 1 yr. old, so most things of this nature are a mystery.)

Can anyone shed light on possible solutions?

I had that happen and it was very annoying and difficult to fix.

I disassembled the drain and took the actuator off in the tub and I was able to "bang" the cylinder upwards to free it. Then I took a rotary sander on a flexible shaft and I was able to remove the burr. I then put silicone grease on the cylinder and re-assembled. It was replaced about a year ago.

I don't like the mechanism, but that's what Lowe's had.

There are two types of tub wastes. Yours should be the one on the left,(see image). Remove the two screws holding the face plate and attempt to pull the brass plug out. It may help to squirt some WD-40 down there to loosen it up. If the linkage comes apart don't panic. Put a bend in a heavy coat hanger and hook the plug through the rod running across the top. After you get it out clean and lubricate the plug and the inside of the pipe. Reassemble and test. Good luck, Tom
