I don't know that there are any marketing strategies that are foolproof. It's all about cost and benefit, supply and demand, etc.

Well there are a lot of them, but what I found really worked, is to get mouths talking about it, hand out your business card to everyone (give 10%off on the back if you want), leave it at restaurants, gas stations, random people in the mall, parking lot... Put adds in the paper. I don't know where your location is... but sandwich boards on the sidewalk, find the most read newspaper and advertise in it. Also another cheap way to advertise is go to the post office and put fliers in as many boxes... they usually charge around 0.10 per box. Have a grand opening, invite the press,. well that's all I can think of off the top of my head...

Good, helpful answer above! It is true that there are a lot of marketing strategies. And, it is also true that none of them are foolproof. I like the idea about advertising a discount on the back of a business card. I give a discount for one of my businesses during certain, special times of the year. Also, in agreement with the answer above, word-of-mouth is of course also very important.
