If you give up your "rights" and sign for the child to be adopted, and the parent with custody has a partner that adopts, the child, your child support ends.

If you merely go to court and sign over your rights in court, you merely can't have any say on raising the child or any visits, but you will still pay child support

In virginia, you don't have to pay child support, but any family members of the now non-parent have the right to file for visitation. And can get it too. The theory is that the parent may have given up the right to the child but the other family members didn't.

Can you cite the law to support that?

We've seen that laws do vary on this from state to state. In some areas, termination of parental rights does relieve the parent of the responsibility to pay support. In others it doesn't. However, where it does termination is extremely hard to get. In most cases it hard to get, in those aeras its harder.

One theme that does seem to follow is that a parent won't be allowed to relinquish rights just to get out of paying support.

I can't other than personal experience. From the custodial parent's point of veiw. When my ex gave up his parental rights (and no longer had to pay child support), his parents sued for grandparents visitation rights and were granted what is considered standard (every other weekend, one week over christmas and 2 weeks in the summer). When I asked if I could appeal, my attorney advised me that just because my daughter's natural father gave up his right to parent my child, his parents did not give up their right to visit her and be a part of her life. He got the best of both worlds-he didn't have to support her and he got to see her.

I would need to know more about the circumstances here. I can't believe a judge allowed a father to relinquish his rights just to get out of child support. There must have been some extenuating circumstances there.
