    Is Tuscany sick?
    Hi all,

I am not sure if I am just being over protective or if I really should go to the vet. Tuscany vomitted on Tuesday night and had diarrhea Tuesday in the middle of the night. Since he had vomitted I did not feed him dinner in Tuesday. But on Wednesday he woke up hungry so I fed him, he was fine, no vomitting and his stools were a bit soft, but not runny. I took him to my Mother in Law's so that she could watch him all day. She said that he played with her cats, ran the house and acted fine all day. When I came home he did seem fine to me. He ate dinner well again last night, no vomitting his stool was still a bit soft too. This am he ate again and again stools were soft.

Since I am absolutely neurotic when it comes to my dogs I want to rush him off to the vet immediately because his stool is soft. But, honestly that is his only symptom- he has not vomitted since Tuesday night. Am I being over protective? I swear ever since the lepto vaccine issue everything makes me a mess.

Tell me to relax if I should!

It is tough to know for sure. If he is a forager, who knows what indigestible he may have found. Just like us, dogs have their own 24 hour flu. I would see how he is tomorrow, or even Saturday if your vet has Saturday hours. You don't want a sudden turn for the worse outside regular hours.

It is easy to post a knee jerk ''Take it to the vet''. I don't run my own dogs to the vet at the first sign of problems, but have always managed to when they needed it. I feel terrible about not telling tla23t to take her dog to the vet Sunday night when Monday morning was too late. I think when people come here, they are hoping to hear from those with more experience. I don't think an automatic take it to the vet helps in cases where it has worked for me not to take my dog.

A couple of weeks ago my mother-in- laws Cihahuia did the same thing this lasted on and off for about 4 days she is around 9 months old and utd on her shots.. The vomiting was daily and the stools were runny 1 day soft the next. This went on for 3 or 4 days. She really did not want much food but she kept drinking water. For the most part she continued to play. She's fine now. That has been 2 weeks ago.

Labman, I don't want to overstep you here. But I have one question if you don't mind. I know it's not my forum, but I had this happen recently too.

    Tuscany,

Have you changed Little Tuscany's diet at all recently? Any new foods of any kind?

It may be an old wives tale... but when my Abram was constipated I was told to give him some apple and that would loosen his stool to get him going. Worked like a charm. Very well could be the apple peels making his poop squishy.

I really don't know to be honest. I was just interjecting a question here that may have caused this. Labman or Ruby would know better than I. But I have heard, and please correct me if I am wrong, that a change in a dogs diet can cause some intestinal upset. I had to change dog food for one day (little emergency) and Kimmie had an upset tummy the next few days, I thought that may have been it.

I do know, in humans though, that apples can cause loose stools. Don't know about dogs though.:o

That is quit true. That is why I asked if he was a forager. Quite often they find something the body decides to get rid of as quickly as possible. It is dangerous to give a constipated dog anything until a vet determines the cause and suggests it.

Tuscany is a nosy little devil. And so it very well could have been those dang apple peels. Crazy dog! I went home to check on him during lunch and he was fine. Ran like the ens after a bird. Did not want to come in when I asked. Typically Tussany behavior. So maybe I am just over reacting.

But WHAT am I going to do when I have children with 2 legs?

Very funny you should mention that! I often wonder what sort of worries 2 legged kids will give me when I have them! I applaud you for being so conscientious of your puppy, as it seems I find myself rushing to the ER every time they sneeze different! Especially after the ordeal I went through with Ruby (my doberman) that passed away due to parvo. I spent every dime I had trying to save that pup with no avail. Everything happens for a reason though right? I now have 2 beautiful healthy rottweiler pups. One I've had since Ruby was still alive that stayed healthy (thank God) and one I recently adopted. Oh, and as for the apple thing, it was my vet that suggested I give him apple for his constipation. She recommended just a little bit though. If Tuscany went to town with the apples, maybe that's why the soft stools lasted as long as it did. Just a thought. I'm glad he's feeling better!

Tuscany honey! I am so sorry I didn't see your post until now. YES. It was most definitely the apple peel! It needs to completely work through his system. Sounds like it pretty much already has. Vets do recommend apples for constipation. The peel isn't something that is easily digested and should just pass through his system and very often will create a loose stool. Honey, I am not chuckling. I wish more people would ask questions at the first sign of illness. As you have seen from some posts, a lot of people wait until it is too late. Just make sure that the real Tuscany sticks only to his chow and water. No treats for a few days. There are some dogs, like mine, that cannot handle fruit or vegetables of any kind. She will get instant diarrhea. Vets will usually suggest pumpkin when stools are loose to help firm them up. In my dog's case, it didn't help at all. I would suggest that you just keep him away from any human foods. It is much safer in the long run.

    Good call J_9. ;)

My daughter will soon be finding out. I think her and her new son may be coming home from the hospital today. They decided to forgo raising a puppy for the dog guide school when they turned their last one in earlier this year. They still have their little 5 year old terrier mix. He is a forager too. I have often wondered how those with little children in the house manage Lab and Golden puppies that shred anything left where they can find it. I remember when our kids were little they screamed if the pet we had at the time just walked through knocking over and scattering Star Wars stuff.

Note, just because one vet suggested apples in one case, doesn't mean it is a good idea to give it to a different dog that may have a different problem.

First and foremost congratulations on the new addition!! I'll bet everyone's so excited! Secondly, you're right labman, it is always wise to have a vet check the animal before administering something out of the norm such as apples. I'm glad you pointed that out!:)

Ok so nobody laugh... this morning Tuscany would not poop at all... of course he pooped late last night so he is probably good. And it is actually a sign that his system must be getting on track because he does not always poop in the morning

But, it actually brought a smile to my face because here I am outside in my undies begging my dog to poop when just a couple of days ago I was praying that he would stop pooping!

I am just never happy. That is it... I am going back on the pill... I don't think I can handle kids.

Hey Labman, congrats on the new addition to your family. What is his name?

    Congrats!

Tuscany, you are a caring person. How many parents do we see that ignore or dismiss problems their children are having. Don't second guess yourself. You will make a great Mom.

Congrats again Labman! Have a great time visiting with them this weekend. Relax & enjoy yourself.

If you are feeding her the recalled food then I would take her to the vet because that's how my brothers dog died.
