At most reputable and some not so reputable pet stores you can purchase books on different pets. It would be advisable to purchase said book and have it on hand for quick reference in the future. As far as if the one you have now is pregnant, look for signs of the hamster getting "fatter" and eating more. And before you know it , you will know it, and there will be more hamsters than you may want. So check with pet stores about selling the excessive hamsters to them for them to resell.

We started with two hamsters many years ago and wound up breeding some real cute Angora Hamsters (long haired). The colors varied from white to black and silver. We had over 50 in the house in different cages at one time. That was one experience.

What I did was make a deal with the pet shop in that I gave them the babies for grains and hamster bedding. Worked out good for both.

It was an experience for my daughter too - she had her favorites and took super care of them while growing up.

Hope you enjoy your new family members as much as we did.

They would eat a lot. Be a little aggressive. Give her extra treats and care. When the babies are born you have to separate the male from the female because males get jealous and will eat the babies(personal experience). Two weeks after the babies are born you should put the male back with the female but buy two extra cages because you have to put all female babies in one and all male babies in the other. Two weeks AFTER that you have to individually cage Each baby in a separate cage until one week later then you can sell them. WARNING: HAMSTERS CAN HAVE 12-24 BABIES AT A TIME.
