Our house is 6 years old, and we are the original owners. Our master bathroom is one where you walk through the bathroom to get to the closet. There is a window above the shower/tub, but it doesn't open and there are no air vents in the closet. I keep a pretty clean house, but that bathroom never smells clean. Sometimes it smells like feet, other times it smells like shoe leather, other times it just stinks. I've put baking soda by the shoes, and use lysol all the time trying to get rid of odors but nothing is working. We've talked about replacing the window with a sliding one, so we can let in fresh air, but that is fairly costly. That may be our only option, but I thought I'd try to find a cheaper solution first.

Any ideas on how to get rid of these odors?

Bizemom, unfortunately the only way to get rid of the odors is through venting your bathroom properly. That mean getting a window that you can open. It is usually cheaper to do that than actually installing a proper vent fixture. They do make those fixtures that are both a light and a vent but to purchase one and ensure that it is installed correctly, meaning having an electrician do it, the cost of that will outweigh the cost of replacing a window.

Thanks for the info RubyPitbull. I'm glad you said that because putting vents in the closets was one of the options my husband was going to look into. We'll have to check out/price both options.

You are welcome biz. Doing what you are planning on is the best thing to do. Price everything out. Just be aware while you are doing this that a simple "fan" fixture without putting in some sort of venting for circulating air flow, may not get rid of the issue you are having. Proper ventilation is extremely important in resolving the issue you are having.
