    Yorkipoo broke his femur
My six month old yorkie poo broke his femur two days ago and he is in a cast. He seems to be in a lot of pain. He lays and sleeps. He isn't moving but very little. He wants nothing to eat or drink. He is on pain pills and antibiotics. He isn't supposed to move much or put weight on it but seems to be so lifeless. Is this normal?

If he is on meds he really needs to be drinking. I would call the vet I f I could not get him to take fluids. I would not be so worried about the food but the water would have me worried. Try some ice chips, offer broth, or even trying freezing some and offering, you could also try petsmart or another petstore to see if they have a suggestion on a fluid replacement. If possible call the vet. I know it is a holiday weekend but maybe they have someone on call for emergencies. I'm not sure how long it takes a small dog to become dehydrated.

bushg has brought up some good points.

It is very normal for a dog on pain medication to not move around and sleep all the time. But, he does need to at least take in some form of liquid to keep him hydrated. As bushg states, try the ice chips, beef or chicken broth, they usually will respond to that. If he doesn't, since it has been two days, you need to call your vets office. Most do have someone on call for emergencies. He can go without food for a few days but it is crucial that he remain hydrated. Tell whoever is on call exactly what work was performed, the medications he has been given, exactly what has transpired with the dog for the past two days, and when you remember the last time he took in any fluids. I would ask if the pain medication may be to strong a dosage. The vet may tell you to reduce the dosage, suggest another liquid product to try, or more than likely will direct you to bring him in to place him on an IV drip until he is ready to drink and eat again.
