Singing lessons will be invaluable to you. Give you poise, concentration, breathing skills when singing, all that good stuff. As your skills improve, so will your confidence. I do not know any singer who does not get nervous before a performance. Granted, I do not know many singers (about a dozen or so) but they all have told me that they get those little jitters.

Good luck with the lessons! Enjoy them!

Having been a professional performer for many years on various instruments that also include voice, I still get nervous before and during a performance. But, even though I am nervous, I have learned how to concentrate on the performance so much, because I have practiced well enough, that I don't think so much about my being nervous.

One of the keys to feeling confident, is practicing enough on your own. And, I mean perfect practice, because there are many ways to practice incorrectly. Once you know the songs well enough, you will have already gained a lead on being confident. Also, practicing singing in front of others in situations that aren't exactly performances in front of a general audience will also help. I am glad that you are going to be taking singing lessons! That will really help you, especially if your voice teacher has you sing in front of other students - you will "all be in the same boat." You will all be nervous. And, then if your teacher does provide opportunities for actual recitals in front of a general audience, will also help you greatly.

Another thing that can be a real confidence builder is to get involved in a church choir and musical theater productions. You can be part of a larger group first, and then work up to singing solos in front of a congregation in a church. In shows, you might be part of a chorus first, and then work up to point to where you will have a part where you might have a solo or solos in a show.

If you don't already know how to do it already, learning how to play at least a little on the piano can also help you with your singing. There have been many times when I have had to plunk out the notes for professional singers that could not do it for themselves. By being able to at least plunk out your part on your own, it saves you time in having to find someone to do it for you.

Volunteering to sing for people at nursing homes can also be a way to build confidence. The audience is always very forgiving if you mess up, but they will love what you do anyway!
