Apparently it's no rumor. I would be underwhelmed if he chose Chertoff also, but it's early in the rumor cycle. Here is what I heard this morning (yes I was watching that evil Fox News... talking to a Democrat no less):
"This was long overdue, but thank God it has come. The Department of Justice was virtually non-functioning under the attorney general. It's a wonder he stayed on so long," Schumer, D-N.Y., told FOX News. Schumer said the top problem for Democrats regarding the attorney general is that he "did not put the rule of law first."
"The No. 2 problem is that he didn't competently" run the department, Schumer said.
"I'm glad he's stepping down so the department can move forward with its important work," Sen. Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told FOX News.
Democratic strategist Bob Beckel agreed that the decision was "well overdue."
"The question is, why did he take this long. This bleed has been going on for more than a year," Beckel told FOX News, adding that the nominee to replace Gonzales will face a "contentious" hearing. Beckel predicted that Bush would name a Democrat just to get a nominee through the Democratic-led Senate.
"It would have to be a Democrat who is not a liberal Democrat," said Weekly Standard editor and FOX News contributor Fred Barnes, who doubted the president would pursue that course.
I somehow doubt Specter's vision will come to pass, unless of course he does nominate a Dem - they'll be raising the 'spectre' of the US attorney firings all over again in any other nomination hearing.

It could happen. I'd at least be happy that Gonzo was gone-zo.

Beckel predicted that Bush would name a Democrat
Not going to happen . I mentioned in excon's posting why I thought the action took so long .
Recall when Nixon needed to replace his AG Mitchell with Richardson one of the quid pro quo for Senate approval was that he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the Executive Dept.
I have no doubt that a similar stipulation would be asked of a Gonzales replacement .

Yeah ;I'm not thrilled with him either . He has not shown competence at HLS .Why reward him with the Justice Dept. I am concerned he is a former black robed oligarch who is in over his head.

Yeah, I wouldn't be thrilled with Chertoff either. So I think that makes it unanimous.

Shouldn't someone mark this occasion, unanimity against a possible Bush move? :D

His lasting legacy will be the Military Commissions Act. What a disgrace he has been! Good riddance.
