Hope someone can help. There is a "vent" on the top of the sink, for the dishwasher. Sometimes water comes up through this, but I have been told its not suppose to. What can I do to make sure the lines are cleaned out so this doesn't happen?
My old home had the dishwasher and garbage disposal draining in the same pipe, so I was told to put ice cubes down the garbage disposal and chop it up, and that would help clean out the grease accumulation. This dishwasher doesn't drain in the same pipe as the disposal. So what else is there to do?

Who ever told you that was dead wrong. That's a indirect waste air gap for your dishwasher. If water does not come through then the dishwasher isn't draining.
You may still clean the blades on your disposal with ice cubes and if the disposal gets a little smelly take and cut a lemon into quarters and run that through also. Good luck, Tom

Hi Speedball1. So water only comes up through this vent on the top of the sink, just a little. So does that indicate anything wrong? It seems to be draining the water out OK, and the dishes are coming clean.

Hi Grets,
As you can see by the drawing the drain hose is connected to the air gap and ALL WASTE WATER should drain through it. Where yours is going I don't know. We don't use air gaps when we install a dishwasher. Looping the drai hose up to the top of the under side of the counter top performs the same function which is to prevent the dirty water from draining back into the washer. I'll put up a drawing showing the two different methods. More qestions? I'm as close as click. Tom
