Can a debt collector DOUBLE the amount I owe?
Hi,
I just had my Bank Account frozen by Rubin & Rothman on Friday. I was told by my bank to contact the Debt Collector and take it from there. I have been trying to understand why, if I have a judgement against me for $5500, how can my bank account be frozen for almost $11000? I am still waiting for the garnishment to begin. I am extremely nervous and unsure what to do. I acknowledge that I owe a debt, and I WANT to pay it... I'm just at a loss and am very scared after reading & hearing all the horror stories. Can someone PLEASE help me?

Debt collectors are pure evil and will often try to con you into paying extra expenses that you don't owe, so don't take any BS from them.
Get in contact with all the people you owe money to and make arrangements to pay them off - offer them as low a rate of repayment as you dare (they'll probably accept) and if they want to take you to court, let them - the court is heavily on your side in cases of debt so don't be afraid of them.
It is critical that you do not allow the debt to snowball so don't just sit on your hands waiting for the end of the world, the debt collection agency will try to take everything you've got so don't listen to a word they say - it's all lies.
Take the matter back to the courts if you possibly can, you will get no help from the debt collectors but you WILL from the court.

If the judgment is for $5500, than that is all they get, contact the bank demand to see the garnishment paper they were served with.
If $5500, than anything over that can be released to you. If they fail to comply, with they do release the funds change banks.

If you lost the case you most likely were told you have to pay all legal and court fees, you said you have a judgement against you, read the details to see if you had to pay for the court costs and their lawyer's fees.
If so this would explain it but I would contact their lawyer and ask for a breakdown and justification for over $5000.00 in fees.

Try contacting the Attorney General's office in your local area. They will give you a lot of information on Rubin & Rothman. I was told that they are just a collection agency concerned with getting your money at any costs. That is what happened in my case. They placed a lien against me in the county where I live. I paid it off and one month later they proceeded to take all of the money out of my checking and savings accounts in the county where I work. EVEN THOUGH they had been paid in full. I got an attorney and they have ignored his requests to cease and desist as well as refund the money that they took illegally from me. I am now awaiting the paperwork from the Attorney General's office to see what I can do to get my money back. Good Luck in dealing with them.
