    Relinquishing rights
    My ex has finally agreed to relinquish his rights to our son. How and where do I get started with the paperwork? :confused:

    You need to get an attorney. They can handle everything for you so nothing is missed.

    Is this to clear the way for an adoption? Then you need an attorney to prepare the adoption papers. The atty will also prepare and file the relinquishment.

    If this is not to clear the way for an adoption then why bother? What do you expect to gain? It is not easy to get a court to agree to a relinquishment, even a voluntary one.

    It was not hard for me. My ex wrote a letter explaining that he wanted to give up rights and signed it. I took it to the courthouse and they drew the papers up. They mailed them to my ex and they came back signed and notarized within weeks. The court send me copies and filed their copies. My current husband then adopted her within weeks through a similar routine and a trip to the courthouse. Just call your local clerk and ask the procedure.
