Landlords responsibilities and my right as a renter
I came home tonight to find a bat in my apartment. My landlord has been putting a new air and heating system in for nearly a month. I have holes in my walls and ceilings in muiltple rooms. I believe this is how it got into my apartment. What can I do? It is crazy that they are taking nearly a month to finish this and now I finding disgusting flying creatures in my home. I also think the bat may have bite my cat, his face is bleeding. Please help! By the way I am in Kentucky.

    A bat! Wow! And YUCK!

I've been a landlord for over 13 years and at this point thought I'd pretty much heard it all. This is a new one.

I agree with you - a month to install a new heating/air system is on the excessive side.

Get out your lease and read it over thoroughly. Most leases will have something in them regarding habitability/safe living conditions/etc. Also check out your state's laws in the first post in this forum. Just get all of the details you can, write it all out and keep a copy of it. Then I'd suggest taking the letter in, in person, and having a calm, professional conversation with them. Point out specifically what laws/lease rules you believe have been broken and tell them very specifically what you'd like to have happen. You might as well ask for the moon - that will leave some room for negotiation.

Good luck and keep us posted.
