Cleaning a dog bed
Silly question but... how often should I wash my dog's bed? I got one with a removable cover so that I can wash it, but now I'm wondering if dogs find it more comforting if the bed smells like them (in which case, I'd only wash it if it gets dirty) or if it should be washed more often.

Maybe once every month or 2 when it looks dirty.

Froggy, how about, when you can't stand looking at it anymore? LOL. When it gets full of hair and dirty, wash it.

Laugh... I can do that! Here I was feeling guilty that I didn't want to wash it weekly. :)

My dog loves my bed as soon as I wash the covers. As soon as I replace them he's the first one in the bed.I guess all dog's may be different, but fresh is better for you.:D

Well, Pompano, if you are talking about MY bed, that is a completely different story! I haven't slept on her bed for quite a while. LOL. I wash the dog bed covers when they need to be washed. I can't stand seeing dirt in my home so the timing is hard to say. It depends on how many dogs have been with us and if the dog bed looks like it needs to be cleaned. Sometimes they get washed once a week, sometimes once a month. During the winter time I don't foster. My dog is a low shedder, so the beds she doesn't use, get washed once every two months or so. I think it has more to do with our own personal comfort levels. I know people who rarely clean and never wash the dog beds.

I have a lab who seems to shed like crazy so I vacum his bed weekly and wash the cover about once a month, spray the bed itself with allergan reducing febreze and let it lay out on the deck for about 6 to 8 hours flipping it occasionally. Granted our 17 lb female tabby spends more time in the dog's bed than the 135 lb lab does... go figure LOL

Dogs find their smell more comforting but if you wash their bed once a week they don't mind. It will keep them cleaner and less likely to get fleas.
