    Divorce
    Hello.
I am a 32 year old woman that left her husband of 1 year because of mental and emotional abuse.  We hve no children together and acquired no property while married.  I am a disable veteran (I receive $28,000 a year in diability) and he works for the board of eduaction and makes well over $80,000 a year, and he has a non profit organization that I know makes money but he never told me how much.   I was a single mom with two children when he met me and I was taking care of the three of us all alone just fine or 8 years before he came along.  He never helped me financially throughout our relationaship, and only paid for half of the rent.  I was fine with that at first because I was so accostumed to doing things for myself.  Then I realized I was crazy for letting him take advantage of me.  He would call me names, yell at me, throw me out the car, and threaten me if I ever went against what he believed or said. All of this was in front of my children. I knew this would get worse and it did. Well I gathered my strength, with the help of prayer and God, and packed what I could and left with my children.  I left the state and he has no idea where I am.  I was going to file for a divorce but he supposedly has done it already and has been trying to contact me in order to serve me the papers.  He relays messages to me through my family still living in NY.  I have been hiding from him for two months now and I really don't want to deal with him, but I know eventually I have to get divorced.  Well, my question is as follows:  We were married in NY and he plans (or already did so) to file for the divorce there.  In NY there is no divorce under irreconsilable differences.  The only choice I believe he would choose are either Adultry (because he believes I left him for someone else-but I didn't) or Cruel and Inhumane treatment (because he would always tell me that I was a sick *itch).  I would have thought we could get a divorce under me abandoning him, but it has to be for a year.  So, I just want to get this divorce over with and am willing to sign almost anything to get it done.  I don't want his money, I don't want anything from him except a quick divorce.  So if I sign papers saying that I agree with his Adultry or Cruel and Inhumane treatment statement, will I be liable for anything myself?  ??
Can anyone help me with this??
    Thank You in advance
    God Bless

You possess the courage and strength that you need to face the music, after all, you found the strength to leave this pathetic parasite. Find good legal representation and face the problem head on-obviously, you are a lot smarter and stronger than you give yourself credit for.

I don't know what happens if you sign based on adultery. I would imagine that it's sort of a moot point since he makes more money than you do and you share no assets. I would imagine it would only be held against you if you filed for spousal support, which I assume you do not intend to do. You can usually get a referral to an attorney through your local courthouse, and the initial consultation is about $50 for the first hour instead of the typical hourly rate of about $150. You could pay the $50 and take the one hour consultation and ask the lawyer if signing under allegations of adultery would affect anything.
